Lifetime warranties: which gear makers really stand behind it, and the fine print

Checked on . Erika & Joe.

Our verdict

A "lifetime warranty" almost never means "we'll replace it forever, no matter what." Of the gear we cover, Pelican's cases have the broadest promise: a lifetime guarantee against breakage or defects in workmanship [1]. Peak Design covers manufacturing defects and failures that stop the product working, but not cosmetic wear or accidents [3]. Le Creuset and Staub cover enameled cast iron for life against defects, but not chips from drops or overheating [5][6]. Two popular "for life" picks are actually term warranties: Leatherman is 25 years and Helinox is 5 years [7][8].

The short answer

Brands with true lifetime warranties among our picks are Pelican (cases, against breakage or defects) [1], Peak Design (manufacturing defects and functional failures) [3], Le Creuset (enameled cast iron, original owner only) [5] and Staub (cast iron, original owner, defects only) [6]. Leatherman's warranty is 25 years [7]. Helinox's is 5 years [8]. All exclude misuse. Check what a warranty covers before you pay extra for it.

How to read a lifetime warranty

Three questions tell you what a warranty is worth:

Whose lifetime? Le Creuset's enameled cast iron warranty lasts "as long as a covered consumer" owns it and ends if the pot is sold [5]. Staub covers the original owner [6]. A secondhand pot usually isn't covered.

Defects or damage? Most lifetime warranties cover defects, not accidents. Staub says plainly that chips from drops or impacts aren't covered [6]. Pelican is broader, covering breakage as well as defects [1].

Where did you buy it? Staub says coverage may not apply to products from unauthorized sellers or online marketplaces [6]. Buy from the maker or an authorized dealer if the warranty matters to you.

Pelican 1510: the broadest promise

Pelican guarantees its injection-molded cases for a lifetime against breakage or defects in workmanship, and says they're watertight to 1 m for 30 minutes with an undamaged O-ring [1]. The 1510 is a 22 x 13.81 x 9 in carry-on-size case, IP67 rated, weighing 13.6 lb with foam, rated from -40°F to 190°F [2]. Pelican repairs or replaces at its option, but its liability doesn't cover what's inside [1]. Owners report years of airport travel with a 1510 [11]. Some say the latch tabs wiggle normally, and one tapes the latches before checking a case [12].

Peak Design: lifetime, with a refurb twist

Peak Design's warranty covers manufacturing defects and breakages that make a product non-functional [3]. It excludes scratches, stains, wear and tear, misuse and accidents [3]. Replacements may come from open-box, used or refurbished stock, quality-checked by Peak Design [3]. Owners like the 20L's side access, and one warns that side-pocket zippers can come off the track [13]. That kind of failure is what the warranty is for.

Le Creuset and Staub: lifetime on the iron, not on your habits

Le Creuset's lifetime limited warranty covers enameled cast iron against defects for household use, if you follow its care instructions [5]. It excludes overheating, abuse and commercial use, and it doesn't apply to non-cast-iron parts and accessories [5]. Staub's limited lifetime warranty covers defects for the original owner [6]. Staub won't repair cookware, and it treats natural variations in enamel and casting as normal, not defects [6]. Owners say not to preheat enameled pots empty at high heat [14][15]. Overheating is exactly the kind of damage these warranties exclude [5]. Compare the two: Le Creuset vs Staub.

Leatherman and Helinox: long, but not lifetime

Leatherman's warranty is 25 years, limited. You submit a form online and mail the tool [7]. Helinox covers the Chair One for 5 years against manufacturing defects [8]. Both are good warranties. They're just not lifetime, despite how often they show up on "buy it for life" lists.

Who this guide is for

  • People paying more for gear specifically because of a warranty.
  • Anyone deciding between a premium brand and a cheaper copy.
  • Campers who want to know whether sand, heat and hard use void their coverage.

Who should skip it

  • If you buy secondhand, most of these warranties won't transfer to you [5][6].
  • If you need accident coverage, none of these makers covers drops or misuse [1][3][5][6]. Look at a separate insurance plan instead.

Warranties and desert use

Sand and grit. Peak Design excludes wear and tear [3]. Zippers that fail from grit can be hard to separate from a defect, so clean zippers after dusty trips.

Heat. Pelican rates the 1510 to 190°F [2], higher than most car interiors. Le Creuset excludes overheating [5], so don't set an empty enameled pot over a roaring campfire.

Thermal shock. Staub excludes damage from improper care [6]. Owners warn against thermal shock with enameled cast iron [15]. Never pour cold water into a hot pot at camp.

Paperwork. Keep receipts and register products where offered. Staub has a product registration link [6]. Proof of purchase helps with "original owner" rules.

What owners say

  • Pelican 1510: years of travel; latch tabs wiggle; taping latches before checking [11][12].
  • Peak Design 20L: side access praised; side-pocket zippers can leave the track [13].
  • Le Creuset: don't preheat empty [14].
  • Staub: some enamel chips after years, some within uses; avoid thermal shock [15].

Questions people ask

Does Leatherman have a lifetime warranty?

No. It's 25 years, limited [7]. Asked as "Does Leatherman have a lifetime warranty," this follows the cited source and nothing else.

Does Le Creuset replace chipped pots?

It covers defects, not abuse or overheating. A chip from a defect may qualify; one from a drop doesn't [5].

Is the Pelican lifetime warranty transferable?

Pelican's page doesn't limit it to the original owner, but it does cap liability at the case price [1].

Does Peak Design replace with new items?

Not always. Replacements may be refurbished or open-box, in the same or better condition [3].

Does Staub cover marketplace purchases?

Possibly not. Staub says coverage may not apply to unauthorized sellers [6].
