How we research

Checked on . Erika & Joe.

The short answer

Each page is built from the maker's own specs and price, checked on a stated date, plus public owner reports from forums and Reddit, linked so you can read them yourself.

How we research a product

1. Maker specs first. We start from the maker's product page for size, weight, materials, ratings and warranty. Each fact gets a numbered citation to that page.

2. Price with a date. We record the maker's list price and the date we checked it. Prices change, so the date is always shown. When a maker doesn't publish a price, or its page isn't reachable, we say so and name the retailer we cite instead.

3. Owner reports. We read public owner threads on Reddit, forums and shop reviews, and summarize the complaints and praise that come up. Each summary links to the thread. When there's little owner discussion, the page says that.

4. A verdict. We say who the product suits, who should skip it and what to buy instead.

5. Desert context. Where it fits, we explain heat, dust, sand and camp use, based on the maker's ratings.

Where facts come from, in order

1. The maker's product page for the exact model. 2. The maker's other regional sites when the home-country page doesn't show a price or isn't reachable. We name the region and currency. 3. Authorized dealers that reproduce the maker's spec sheet, clearly labeled, when the maker's own page can't be read. 4. Reputable news coverage for launch prices, labeled with its date.

Corrections

Prices and specs change. If a maker updates a page, we update ours and change the checked date. Every page shows when its facts were last checked; most were checked 2026-10-16.
