Helinox Chair Zero: the 1 lb camp chair, and its trade-offs

Checked on . Erika & Joe.

Our verdict

The Chair Zero is the chair to buy if every ounce in your pack counts. Helinox lists it at $139.95, 509 g assembled, 265 lb capacity, and a 14 x 4 x 4 in packed bag [1]. That's less than half the weight of the Chair One (re) [2]. The trade-offs are a lower, smaller seat and less capacity, and owners say the small feet sink in sand and the chair can tip backward [4][5][6]. If you mostly car camp, the Chair One is the more comfortable pick for the same price.

The short answer

The Helinox Chair Zero is an ultralight folding camp chair. Helinox lists 509 g (1 lb 2 oz) assembled and 531 g packed, a 265 lb (120 kg) capacity and a 14 x 4 x 4 in packed size, for $139.95 with a 5-year warranty [1]. The same page's feature list says 1 lb 1 oz, so expect about a pound [1]. Owners say it sits low, can tip backward and sinks in soft sand without wider feet [4][5][6]. Checked 2026-10-16.

What it does well

Weight. About 509 g [1] is the whole point. Helinox calls it the lightest camping chair "available anywhere" [1]; that's Helinox's claim, not ours.

Pack size. It packs into a 14 x 4 x 4 in cinch bag [1], about the size of a water bottle, so it fits in a pack side pocket.

Fast setup. Shock-corded poles snap into the hub, and the seat slips over the frame [1].

Tough fabric for the weight. Helinox says the aramid ripstop is abrasion-resistant and stops tears from spreading [1].

Where it falls short

It sits low. Helinox Japan lists a 27.5 cm seat height [3]. OutdoorGearLab's tester says getting in and out takes effort [4].

It can tip backward. Reviewers say it's stable side to side but can tip back when you lean or shift [4][7].

Less room and capacity. The seat is 20 x 18 in and holds 265 lb [1], versus 22.5 x 20.5 in and 320 lb for the Chair One (re) [2].

Sand. The small feet sink in soft ground. Owners use a ground sheet, ball feet or a DIY webbing footprint [5][6].

Who it's for

  • Backpackers, bikepackers and paddlers who want a backrest for about a pound [1].
  • Hikers who sit on firm ground like gravel, slickrock and packed dirt.

Who should skip it

In the desert

Sand and washes. This is the main complaint. On r/hikinggear, an owner describes a lighter way to stop it sinking with a homemade footprint [6]. Another on r/hiking asks about a ground cover for the same reason [5].

Wind. An empty chair at 1 lb 2 oz blows away fast in desert gusts [1]. Weigh it with your pack or a rock.

Sun and heat. Store it in its bag between trips. Aluminum frames get hot in direct sun; shade the chair at midday.

Rocks. Set all four feet on flat spots. The frame is light, and reviewers say it tips back easily [4].

What owners say

  • OutdoorGearLab praises the weight and comfort for its size, but says the low seat is hard to get out of [4].
  • Packstack's reviewer calls it light and comfortable but notes the tipping risk [7].
  • Reddit owners say it sinks in sand and make DIY footprints [5][6].
  • A SOTA radio operator reviewing the Chair One and Chair Zero together found the Zero's compactness its biggest selling point [8].
