Fujifilm X100VI: the fixed-lens camera everyone wants, and whether you should
Checked on . Erika & Joe.
Our verdict
The X100VI is the camera to buy if you want one small, beautiful camera with a single lens and excellent files. Fujifilm lists a 40.2 MP APS-C sensor, a 23 mm f/2 lens (35 mm equivalent), in-body stabilization rated at 6 stops, a built-in 4-stop ND filter and a hybrid optical and electronic viewfinder, in a body that weighs 521 g with battery and card [1]. The hard parts are price and stock. Fujifilm's US pages we read don't show a price. US retailers list it at $1,799.95 to $1,799.99, and it's often sold out [2][3]. Owners say it's worth it at retail but not above [4]. If you want a camera that truly fits a jeans pocket, the Ricoh GR IIIx is 262 g [5].

What it does well
Image quality in a small body. 40.2 MP on APS-C [1] gives room to crop, which is how the built-in 50 mm and 70 mm teleconverter crops work [1].
Stabilization. The X100VI adds 5-axis in-body stabilization rated at 6 stops [1]. That helps with slow shutter speeds at dusk.
The hybrid viewfinder. You can switch between an optical finder with electronic frame lines and a 3.69M-dot EVF [1]. Fewer cameras offer this.
Leaf shutter and ND filter. The leaf shutter is quiet, and the 4-stop ND filter lets you shoot f/2 in bright light [1].
Fast autofocus with people. After a month, an owner says eye autofocus keeps up with running kids [7].
It replaces the phone for some. After 12 months, one owner says it became a light second camera for family walks and replaced the phone for the photos they care about [8].
Where it falls short
Price and availability. US retailers we checked list it at about $1,799, and Best Buy showed it out of stock [2][3]. A price tracker reports it sells out fast and that third-party listings often run well above retail [3]. Owners say they wouldn't pay over retail [4].
Not a jeans-pocket camera. At 521 g and 55.3 mm deep [1], it's a jacket-pocket or small-bag camera.
Battery life. About 310 shots with the EVF in normal mode [1]. Carry a spare.
Fixed lens. You get one 35 mm-equivalent view [1]. Crops help, but there's no zoom.
Feel. One owner says the stabilized body rattles and feels less natural in hand than an X-T2 [7].
No weather sealing listed. We didn't find a dust or water resistance rating on the spec page [1].
Who it's for
Who should skip it
- People who need pocket size. The Ricoh GR IIIx weighs 262 g [5].
- People who need zoom. The Sony RX100 VII covers 24–200 mm in a pocket body [10]. See best pocket travel cameras.
- Anyone unwilling to wait for stock or pay about $1,799 [2][3].
- People who want prints, not files. See the Leica Sofort 2.
Using it in the desert and at camp
Heat limit. Fujifilm rates the X100VI for 0–40 °C [1]. Desert afternoons and closed cars exceed 40 °C (104 °F), so keep it in a shaded, light-colored bag.
Bright light. The built-in 4-stop ND filter and the 1/180000 s electronic shutter [1] let you keep f/2 in full sun.
Dust. We didn't find a weather-sealing rating [1]. Fujifilm's owner's manual has a care section for cleaning [9]; use a blower first, not a cloth, on a dusty lens.
Night sky and campfire. The 6-stop stabilization [1] helps handheld shots at dusk. For stars, use a tripod; the bulb mode runs up to 60 minutes [1].
Power. Battery life is about 310 shots with the EVF [1]. Carry spares in a pocket in cold desert nights, since lithium batteries lose capacity when cold.
Humidity. Fujifilm lists 10–80% humidity, no condensation [1]. Let a cold camera warm up in a sealed bag before opening it in a warm tent.
Fujifilm rates the X100VI for 0 °C to 40 °C [1]. Its optical viewfinder [1] makes composing in midday glare easier than a screen.
What owners say
- After 12 months, an owner uses it as a light second camera for family walks and says it replaced the phone for photos they care about [8].
- After a month, an owner says eye AF keeps up with running kids, but the stabilized body rattles and feels less natural than an X-T2 [7].
- Owners who waited for retail stock like it as a small camera next to a Sony kit and say they wouldn't pay above the original retail price [4].
