Ricoh GR IV: the pocket APS-C camera, updated
Checked on . Erika & Joe.
Our verdict
The GR IV is the camera to buy if you want APS-C image quality that really fits a jeans pocket. Ricoh lists a new 25.74 MP back-illuminated APS-C sensor, an 18.3 mm f/2.8 lens (28 mm equivalent), and 262 g with battery and card, for $1,599.95 on its US store [1][2]. Battery life rises to about 250 shots from the GR III's 200 [1]. The catches: no weather sealing [3], owner reports of sensor dust [5][6], and a battery-contact problem some owners report [7]. If you want a 35 mm view, an optical finder and a bigger body, look at the Fujifilm X100VI.

Ricoh's US store lists $1,599.95; its launch MSRP was $1,499.95 [1][2]. The DB-120 battery is rated for about 250 shots [1]. Owners report sensor dust and battery-contact issues [5][7]. What changed from the GR III
New sensor, lens and engine. Ricoh says the GR IV has a newly developed APS-C sensor, a newly designed lens and a new imaging engine [2]. A dealer listing names it GR ENGINE 7 [8].
Better battery. About 250 shots from the new DB-120, versus 200 on the GR III [1].
Faster start. About 0.6 seconds, which Ricoh calls the quickest in GR history [2][8].
microSD instead of SD. B&H lists a microSD slot [3]. Budget for new cards.
In the box, connections and versions
Ricoh ships the GR IV with the DB-120 battery, a USB cable and a hand strap [1][4]. There's no wall charger in the box; the camera charges over USB-C with an optional AC adapter, and Ricoh sells a separate BJ-12 charger that can charge two DB-120 batteries at once [2][4]. B&H lists Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.3, plus a new GR WORLD app for remote control and image transfer [3]. Ricoh's spec sheet also lists DisplayPort video output over USB-C [4].
B&H lists a native ISO range of 100 to 204,800 [3].
Ricoh's spec sheet covers two versions: the GR IV and the GR IV HDF [4].
What it does well
Where it falls short
Sensor dust. The common complaint. Owners on r/ricohGR report dust on new and used units [5][6]. Ricoh's GR support page covers dust on the sensor [9].
Battery contacts. A GR IV issues thread reports cameras that won't power on or charge unless the battery is pressed in [7]. Contact Ricoh if yours does this.
No sealing, flash or finder. B&H lists none [3].
Fixed 28 mm. No zoom [1].
Price. $1,599.95 at Ricoh [1], more than the GR IIIx at $1,249.95 [10].
